Section 8.3 of ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 indicates that “Handling of ESDS items, parts, assemblies and equipment without ESD protective covering or packaging shall be performed while in an EPA.” It implies that if ESDS items, parts, and assemblies are protected by ESD protective covering or packaging, then those ESDS items, parts, and assemblies can moved from EPA to non-EPA. What the extent of ESD protective covering or packaging required?
ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 Section 8.4 – “Packaging” defines the packaging requirements for an ESD control program. This section is supported by ANSI/ESD S541, where sections 6.1 and 6.2 2 list the requirements of packaging for inside and outside of an EPA respectively.
a. Inside: Packaging, when used within an EPA shall be:
i. Low charging
ii. Dissipative or conductive for intimate contact with ESDS items.
b. Outside: Transportation of ESDS items outside of an EPA shall require packaging that provides:
i. Low charging
ii. Dissipative or conductive for intimate contact with ESDS items.
iii. A structure that provides electrostatic discharge shielding.
