Is ANSI/ ESD S20.20-2021 ready for AI?

Hello Experts,
good day.
would like to know if there are related topics on AI and how ESD affect AI and measures to control.

thank you.

How does AI affect ANSI/ESD S20.20. That is a good question. It doesn’t directly affect the standard but it does affect the industry. A direct way is the data rates that are required for AI. The data rates between memory and processors have increased due to the demands of AI. The transaction rate has created memory called High Bandwidth Memory (appriviatted HBM by the way). As the data rate or transactions increase, the parisitic capacitance of ESD device protection becomes a barrier. This is causing a decrease in the withstand voltages of memory.
As of now, ANSI/ESD S20.20 has 100 v HBM and 200 v CDM in the scope, there are more devices that require lower withstand voltages. ANSI/ESD S20.20 can still be used as it is still a framework for an ESD control program but to evaluate what the process can handle requires the tools in ANSI/ESD SP 17.1 - Process Assessment. These two documents should be used together to develop a complete ESD control program to meet the needs of the future.

Hi John,
That is exactly what I am talking about. Right now, the design of ANSI/ ESD S20.20 is still at 100HBM and 200CDM. Is there any released right up or technical paper for at least some guidance and best practices aside form SP17.1?

thank you.

Not at the moment. The next release of ANSI/ESD S20.20 will likely have the same scope requirements. This will be a discussion topic at the next meeting series.

It becomes a little more difficult to figure out what is the correct withstand requirements should be in ANSI/ESD S20.20. This document is meant for everyone and the majority of the devices are still above these thresholds. ANSI/ESD SP 17.1 was develped just for this purpose. At some point, the data will be required from ANSI/ESD SP 17.1 to support the organization or companies claim for process control. ANSI/ESD S20.20 will still provide the requirements or framework for a control plan.

I see.
thank you very much for that insightful information.
