Guidance for Grounding Multimeter Probes

Hello ESD Expert,

We have a requirement from one of our customer that when using unattached instruments (typically multimeters) the probe tips must first be grounded before any measurements are taken.

Could you please provide your guidance on how we can ground multimeter probes?

Sarban,

Grounding mutimeter probes could be done many ways.
-If you are working at a bench with ESD mats, you could touch the probes to the mat prior to taking your measurement
-If the person is grounded, you could touch the sides of the probes with your fingers
-You could touch the probes to any other grounded object prior to making the measurement

I have seen some multimeter cables that hardly charge at all when moved and others that can charge up quite a bit. If you make your measurement immediately after you ground the probes and have a small distance between the grounding place and where the measurement happens, very little charge should accumulate on the multimeter cables.
