Grounding Cord Specification

Hi All
Where can I get the grounding cord specification? such as the resistance limit, material, size, electrical properties, breakaway force
Is there any product qualification?

Hello All ,
Greetings of the day from India . To the best of my knowledge there is no specific specification for grounding cords to connect the work surfaces or floor to ground mentioned in either of the two global standards administered by ESDA. Recently here one of the ESD material supplier who had developed some new ground lead with a three pin top which can be connected to the Equipment grounding outlet directly with 1 M ohm in series as a protective resistor asked to make a PQ test report .
Following was the report I made

Normally here in India a 3 or 6 mm dia multi strands PVC insulated green or black color cables are used . For just a conventional procedure, some suppliers supply green with no resistor and black with 1 mega ohm resistor.

Hope our ESDA experts will throw more information and educate us on this.

Thank you

Erian,

G N is correct that there are no specific specifications for ground cords. The closest thing I could find to an actual requirement is from ANSI/ESD S6.1 on Grounding which states in section 5.3.5 on Mechanical Requirements, “Wires, when used as the conductor for electrical bonding between ESD technical elements and the common point ground or a common connection point, and from the common point ground to the ESD grounding/bonding reference point, shall be of sufficient strength not to be inadvertently broken or disconnected. The wire shall be electrically insulated and, whenever possible, mechanically supported to physical structures to limit mechanical damage.”

There are also no specific product qualification requirements for the ground cords as they are a part of an ESD control item, for instance the resistance requirements for the personnel ground wrist strap connection, worksurface, shelving, etc.

How we qualify if we purchase the grounding cord?

There are no requirements to qualify a grounding cord. It is just a wire that can be measured by any resistance meter. There are no resistance requirements and if fact it is recommended to only use a wire without any resistance.

Rereading this post, are you refering the a ground wire or the ground cord that attaches to a wrist strap? If you are asking about a wrist strap grounding cord, the requirements can be found in either ANSI/ESD S1.1 - Wrist Straps or IEC 61340-4-6. The documents are technically equivalent and you can use either one.
