Grounding connection loose or gets disconnected

Hello All Experts,

Hope you are all doing well.

I would like to seek your guidance regarding the correct grounding cable specifications, lugs, and connectors to be used for providing ground connections to fixtures, jigs, machines, and workstations.

Currently, at our site, we are using 2.5 sq.mm green/yellow cable, crimp ring terminal lugs, and banana (male/female) connectors. However, we have observed that the grounding connection sometimes becomes loose or gets disconnected from the lugs/connectors.

Could you please suggest:

  1. The recommended type/specification of grounding cable
  2. Suitable lugs and connectors
  3. Any better grounding mechanism or best practice that can help prevent such issues and ensure reliable grounding continuity

Your suggestions and recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Rahul,

I don’t have any suggested lugs or wire sizes but I would make sure the person crimping the wire to the lug does it properly (i.e. uses the correct crimp tool, doesn’t insert the insulation into the lug, etc.). If the lug is coming loose from the screw post, you could consider lock washers.

If you are still worried about the wires coming loose from the lug, you could go to a thicker wire or add strain reliefs to the wire. Thanks

Greetings from India to all

  1. Use the right lug size suitable to your cable dia
  2. After crimping (keeping little extra length) if possible better solder extra length of the cable to the body of the lug
  3. As our ESD Expert Andy Sir has suggested add some washers to avoid loose fitting with the post

Hope the above message may be of some help to you .

Thanks a lot Andy Sir for suggestions.

Thanks a lot for your response and guidance.

Hello Sir,

Can we use below Loctite 243 (Thread locker) to avoid grounding lugs issue.

Rahul,

Yes, Loctite should be a good substitute to keep the lug screw from loosening from the nut, similar to using a lock washer.

Thanks a lot Sir for your confirmation.
