ESD Tape (product qual?)

Is it possible that any company defines their own product qualification for ESD safe-tape? why isn’t there a reference in the ESD 20.20? I’m confused since there is a valid reference: ESD ADV11.2 Annex H. Could someone explain? thanks

This is the text:

Product Qualification of ESD safe tape
Tape Unwinding Test and Tape Removal from a Surface Test (Peeling Test) shall be
conducted for all tape part numbers, sample size 6 rolls minimum, for initial product
qualification. Refer to ESD ADV11.2 Annex H

  • List item Peeling electrostatic voltage of the tape shall be less than (<) 100 Volts
when unwound from the roll (Tape Unwinding Test) or remove from
packaging or devices (Tape Removal from a Surface test).

  • List item If reading (>) 100 Volts, that tape part number must be rejected for
product qualification and not used as ESD Safe Tape in EPA.

ADV 11.2 is simply an advisory. It is an old document that would be a Technical Report today. This advisory is a collection of methods that could be considered by ESD program manager. The techniques are in there for information only. This techniques are not reproducable and in most cases are not even repeatable within a lab.

In order to have any ESD control item to be included in ANSI/ESD S20.20, the results must be repeatable and reproducable. The indivigual must then devleop the test that makes sense for the process.

Remember, one requirement of ANSI/ESD S20.20 is the control of process required insulators. If the tape is considered a process required insulator, they use those limits to determine if the tape is a threat of not. If it is, then mitigation techniques (such as ionization) may be required.

Thank you @JohnK

The weird thing to me, is that the ESD safe-tape should be treated or designed to be static dissipative, it’s my assumption.

What is difficult with tape it to make it “safe” and stil be able to make the tape stick. 3M made some tape that would be considered “safe”.
