ESD Lotion - need?

What is the need of ESD lotion?, Can we use only regular moisture lotion?

Santiago,

There are no standards for “ESD lotion” that I know of. The main purpose of using lotion is to reduce the dryness in the skin which can help reduce the body resistance to pass the wrist strap test. Any lotion that helps with this is acceptable

Our concern is this: Are we creating a new risk here? Because people might apply the lotion and then go in the EPA with this lotion on their hands and then it could be applied to some products direct or indirectly.

Hello,
Greetings of the day to all from India

As Andy Sir has confirmed already, the usage of just a drop of any moisturizer is good enough mainly for passing the Wrist strap system on dry skins when a Wrist strap system fails under normal condition during a routine test. It is not mandatory for all to use the moisturizer but depends upon the person’s dryness on the skin while testing the Wrist strap system.
The lotion is not applied all around but only a drop just on the wrist portion all around to ensure proper skin contact with the metal plate and the conductive lines on the inner side of the wrist Band .

Thank You

Santiago,

It seems like your concern is more about the lotion getting on the product. This would be more of a FOD concern not an ESD concern. I think if you rub the lotion into the skin and wait a minute, you shouldn’t have much that would be a FOD concern. Perhaps Matt S, who is also a FOD expert, has some experience with this. If you still think the lotion is a concern, you could have operators wear gloves.

Santiago,

as has been previously discussed, the purpose of the use of lotion is to facilitate a good connection between the skin and personal grounding system.

Yes, there could be a concern from a contamination point of view in that since most lotions are very conductive and if it gets on your product there could create a path between components causing a shorting issue.

While lotions are not prohibited in ESD standards, you may want to ensure that if they are used you follow some general contamination control protocols such as making sure employees clean thier hands thoroughly or wear gloves when handling ESDS items. Hope this helps.
