Does the client need to comply with ANSI/ESD S20.20-2021 Section 8.4.1 – “United States Department of Defense (DoD) Packaging Requirements” if it is a sub-tier supplier to the DoD?

The auditor should ask if the client’s contract with their customer has specific packaging requirements that call out DoD requirements. The requirements for an organization to meet Section 8.4.1 should flow down through the supply chain contractually, see below for an example:

  • DoD Buyer requests Tier 1 Supplier to package ESD sensitive items per the DoD requirements.
  • Tier 1 Supplier requests Tier 2 Supplier (the client) to package per the DoD Spec, etc.
