Compliance Verification - Seating

Is it a requirement in ESD Compliance Verification plan to include ESD chair in periodic verification of ESD Control items? Thank you in advance for the advice.

Per S20.20 Table3 Seating when used as an ESD Control Item shall be verified using the test process defined in TR53. Thus if personnel are using the chair as a grounding source than seating would be treated as an ESD control item.

In the event that personnel are required to use a grounding strap while seated. Than the grounding strap could be considered the ESD control item. The chair at that point may simply be tested as a required insulator. As you are no longer are relying on the chair being grounded to dissipate the static charge. You just need to insure the chair is not introducing a static charge to the area.

Hope this helps you out.

Thank you very much for your help!

Just remember, that seated operations require a wrist strap connection per ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1. If grounding is done through the chair, at tailoring statement must be documented with technical rational and data to support that including how compliance verification is done.
