Assembly/Progressive Line ESD Controls

Hi,

On our progressive line we have Continuous Monitors for personel grounding but no clear way to ensure the ESDS is properly grounded. We have an ESD safe build plate (made from UHMW) but it’s not grounded with a wire or chain, we need it move freely during assembly.

Maybe lining the bottom of the build plate with a more conudctive material so it makes better contact with the roller able would work?

Would love to hear your ideas or what you’ve implemented!

Well, you have mentioned that you have an ESD safe build plate (made from UHMW) but it’s not grounded with a wire or chain as you need it to move freely during assembly.

  • Is your UHMW material used for the build plate ESD safe as per its supplier ?

  • Have you tested per ANSI ESD STM 4.1 applicable work surfaces ?

  • If so, by incorporating some ESD safe castor wheels or SS wheels or heavy duty SS chain to your build plate moving system and ensuring that the build plate is constantly grounded to the assembly frame as it moves you can achieve the required grounding safety.(make sure that the main frame is grounded properly)

  • If the build plate is moving over a roller , use conductive rollers so that it is grounded through the conveyor frame.

However, if you could please share more details and some photos it would be more clear to expect more opinions on this platform.

  • Yes the suppliers specifies the material to be ESD safe and we verified this internally, using Point-to-Point

  • Yes but I do not recall the results at this time and they were not offically documented. We will be conducting tests next week.

  • The build plate needs to move in all latteral directions as well as spin. I don’t think we’d be able to attatch anything to the plate itself.

  • Yes the plate is moving over a roller. I believe the rollers are made of Stainless Steel but I’m not sure. The table itself and the legs are made from galvanized steel. I’ll have to checkl with the design engineer for the Line.

Progressive Line (only photo I have currently. I can take another one if needed)

In my personal opinion, as long as the build plate is grounded through the stainless steel rollers and the measured resistance to ground is less than 1.0×10⁹ Ω, that should be sufficient. There’s no need to hard-ground the build plate.
