Dear experts,

Is it ok to let my automation techs to wear bump cap? Is CV required?

Based on my understanding, it can be allowed since they are not handling any ESDS and PCBAs inside EPA; CV won’t be necessary.

Plus, I just need to add an exemption clause in the ESD Control Program Plan.

Please correct me if I’m wrong. Kindly advise.

Logan,

Using bump caps or any other head covering should be fine as long as they aren’t taken off and placed near your ESD sensitive items as they could be an insulator and emit an electric field, inducing a charge. If they are kept on the head, they should not induce sufficient charge into your ESD sensitive items. ANSI/ESD S20.20 allows any insulator in an EPA as long as it is over 12 inches (300 mm) from your ESD sensitive items.

You wouldn’t need to do any compliance verification testing on any bump caps, but you may need to do some spot check audits to ensure the caps aren’t being placed near your ESD sensitive items.

Greetings of the day from India to all the members on this forum 🌹

Thank you Andy Sir . A good explanation.
Welcome back Mr. Logan after a long time .
Except the PEIs ( process essential insulators) in an EPA for which you need to take care with Ionization , for rest all insulators the best disciplinary rule is to keep them away as far as possible though it is min. 12 " per S 20 20.

Well; in most of the industries as a matter of personnel safety, safety shoes and these bump caps are used and nothing wrong if its usage in an EPA can be mentioned in the ESD control Program Plan But ( In addition to Andy Sir’s suggestion per the above which may please be kept in mind), a line of caution is also to be mentioned to ensure that the bump caps are not removed and placed nearby any ESSD objects in an EPA .

In general, the more we avoid using the unwanted insulators and maintaining full compliance to either of the two standards plus the process assessment is a good culture to provide a fool proof EPA which of course I have not seen yet anywhere but the facilities are getting the ESD S 20 20 or IEC 61340-5-1 facility certification.

Thank you
.

Hi Rahman

Please use the rule:

1. People safety
2. Machine and Facility safety
3. Product safety (there is ESD Protection Program)

This absolutely represents the correct gradation of requirements regarding the components of the industrial plant.
